What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a gathering where people from different backgrounds work together in a collaborative manner over a short period of time to prototype new concepts, products, or services, usually around a specific theme. Teams are typically formed on the spot and each participant has the ability and freedom to work on whatever he or she wants.

Who can participate?

Participation to Radio Hack Europe 2019 is open to media professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, students, and anyone who has a keen interest in new media and technology. This includes broadcasters, journalists, content producers, manufactures, service providers, designers, and software developers.

Should I participate if I don't have a team or project?

Yes, absolutely! Part of the fun of a hackathon is to meet new people. Anyone will have the opportunity to present their project idea at the start of the event, before we begin to build the teams. What matters is that you bring motivation, fresh thinking, and an open-mind.

When and where will it take place?

Radio Hack Europe 2019 will take place from Friday evening 29 March 2019 to Sunday afternoon 31 March 2019 at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), one of the two Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology, which is located in Lausanne, Switzerland.

How much does it cost?

The registration fee is 50 EUR + 7.7% Swiss VAT. This includes meals, snacks, drinks, Wi-Fi, a place to work, as well as special rates to attend the Radiodays Europe conference and to book a hotel. Further information is available on the registration page.

What should I bring?

Each participant must bring the devices and tools they wish to use (laptop, smartphone, smart speaker, etc.). Please note that we will provide you with paper, pens, Post-its, and flip charts. But more importantly, our Associated Partners will provide a wide range of APIs to participants, who are free to use them for their project during the hackathon.

Will the best projects be rewarded?

The ideas and prototypes that will be developed during the hackathon will be evaluated by an international jury of experts, and the winners will receive a trophy and will have the opportunity to present their work to the participants of the Radiodays Europe conference on 1-2 April 2019.

How will the jury evaluate the projects?

The jury will evaluate the projects according to seven criteria (1-6 points each):

1. Elegant hack: Clever remix/reuse of existing material.

2. Creativity: "I never heard of that approach". Also where we evaluate level of disruption.

3. Future of radio & media: How close to your vision for the future of radio and media is it?

4. Tech: Innovation or specially deep use of software or hardware engineering to solve an issue, rewards in particular a working prototype.

5. Art of the pitch: Demo/show/wow effect while presenting.

6. Industry appeal, business feasibility: Is this project relevant to media organizations? What is possible within the contexts of your current work and companies, so that your hacks may one day be implemented?

7. Impact, product-market fit: Is it solving something communities, cities, humanity need at this moment in time? Would the idea meet the existing needs of the audience, or would it be clever enough to drive/create consistent new usages?

What about intellectual property?

We do not claim any intellectual property rights. Each team owns the results it has obtained.
