Attributed to NPR (who deny they've ever done this), the system would turn on Facebook marketing when shows dip out of the Apple Podcasts charts: and turn it off when shows re-enter. Sounds a clever idea.

More from YouTubeWelcome to the many new readers from our coverage of YouTube's podcast plans yesterday.
For noting - YouTube's PDF was dated March 2022 (and has no author), and was sent to us by a third party prior to Kai Chuk's session at Podcast Movement (but glossed over by our source as "it's just a best practice PDF I've got hold of, but it might be interesting"). In order to protect our source, we need to take a little time to make a version of the PDF without its original metadata - we hope we'll have that done tomorrow.
In the meantime, the slides suggest that full video podcasts on YouTube get 2x more views than podcasts just using static images. On the other hand, one slide, below, shows how well a nicely-produced graphic works.
You might reasonably wonder why this sort of helpful information wasn't shared at a podcast conference full of creators and publishers.

Thanks for the coverage TechCrunch and Tubefilter among others; we've approached YouTube for comment.
People- The host of the Capehart podcast, Jonathan Capehart, has been made associate editor at the Washinton Post.
- Brian Swarth is now SVP of Subscriber Engagement and Product Marketing at cable broadcaster AMC Networks. He was Head of Marketing for Audacy's Cadence13 and Pineapple Street Studios.

Exclusive: YouTube's plans for podcasting
Visit https://podnews.net/update/youtube-podcasting-plans for all the links, and to get our newsletter.
In this week's Sounds Profitable with Claritas, Bryan Barletta suggests we make competitive separation a priority in podcasting. Not to do so, he argues, is a bad listener experience - and bad business. Subscribe here.
- Exclusive: YouTube is planning tighter integration, monetisation and analytics for podcasts
Despite no announcement from YouTube's director of podcasting, Kai Chuk, at Podcast Movement Evolutions last week, Podnews has been sent an 84-page presentation produced by YouTube, intended for podcast publishers. In it, three slides marked "Looking Ahead" allow us a view into what YouTube is planning…
%%inlinestart%%%%inlineend%%
YouTube is looking at ingesting podcast RSS feeds directly, the slides suggest, with a new podcasts homepage to be at youtube.com/podcasts (a URL that doesn't work, yet). Podcasts appear to be promoted with familiar, square, artwork thumbnails.
%%inlinestart%%%%inlineend%%
YouTube is to feature audio ads: both sold by Google but also by partners too, if they're large enough. YouTube's standard practice has been to share revenue with publishers, so we might expect, perhaps, revenue to be shared for podcast publishers as well.
%%inlinestart%%%%inlineend%%
YouTube will also supply analytics, particularly "new metrics for audio-first creators". We might expect something aligning with the IAB guidelines, perhaps. And the company appears to be working with podcast attribution, like that available from Nielsen, Podtrac, and Chartable. Chartable was bought by Spotify in February, so perhaps this slide shows companies that YouTube have worked with, rather than companies it might work with in future.
We've contacted YouTube for comment.
- Podimo has bought Dag en Nacht, the largest podcast publisher in the Netherlands. Dag en Nacht have over 60 shows; some will be placed behind Podimo's monthly €5 (US$5.50) paywall.
- PodWheels, powered by Radio Nemo, is set to produce podcasts for trucking professionals.
- Sports broadcaster Mike Francesa has launched The Mike Francesa Podcast, after saying he was hesitant to dive into podcasting because he didn't fully understand it.

- In Canada, Rogers Media is running Canada's Next Great Podcaster across its radio stations: a competition to win CAD $10,000 and get your show idea produced. Caution, though: Matt Cundill pointed out to Podnews that the rules let Rogers use any of your ideas they like (even if you don't win) without giving you a penny (¶7d); it might not really be $10,000 (¶9a); and the draw is entirely random anyway and nothing to do with your entry (¶10).
- We asked Rogers. Matt Mise, Commercial Integration Director, News & Entertainment, Rogers Sports & Media, told Podnews: “It is standard practice under the terms and conditions of our contests that we may use submission entries solely for the purpose of promoting the specific contest (or similar one) that the submission is connected to. After reviewing the terms again, we’ve updated the verbiage to better clarify this. It should be updated on the contest terms and conditions page by Tuesday morning. With regards to how the winner is chosen, this is the first time we’re executing a contest of this type in support of podcasters, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Eligible entries must still provide all required elements to describe and present their podcast concept in order to qualify to be selected. We will look to offer more contests like this in the future where there will be opportunity for a more vigorous selection criteria."
- The Times of India highlight the winners of the Times Podcast Challenge in Kolkata.

Consolidation in podcasting: happening fast

- Podcasting is consolidating fast, according to Edison Research's Tom Webster. If you wanted to reach 50% of all weekly podcast consumers a year ago, you would need to have advertised on the top seven podcast networks. But after considerable acquisition of big independent shows in the past twelve months, you can now reach 50% of weekly listeners if you buy advertising on just four podcast networks, he says.
- Who are they? Webster didn't spell those out in his post, but here's the data, released last month. The four biggest, now reaching 50% of all weekly podcast listeners, are SXM Media, Spotify, iHeartRadio and NPR.
- Just 1.1% of active podcasts in 2021 had transcripts, according to new data; and far fewer for non-English shows. The transcript tag is a relatively simple part of the new podcast namespace, but in spite of accessibility laws in most countries mandating them, no podcast app with more than 1% of the market supports in-app transcripts. SiriusXM was sued in December last year for not supplying them.
- Vizzy has been launched in beta - new podcast software that allows creators to enrich their episodes with visuals and interactive features. A demo app is available now, and a portal for publishers.

The Tech Stuff- Oscar Merry has suggested Lightning Comments as a potential solution for cross-app commenting: using "boostagrams" as a method of sending comments. We like this idea; and the spec is simple enough for us to code it; so, you'll find a "comments" section on every update in Podnews's web version. You can also see those comments in the Fountain app.
- We are also, as of today, permanently supporting the socialInteract tag for Twitter (and will probably pull in those comments to the page, too, at some stage).
- PodKast is a new podcast app for KaiOS, the mobile OS for developing countries. Watch for it using PodKast at the end of the RSS user-agent or audio user-agent.
- The Lava app, and the iVoox app, are currently not sending any useragent for its RSS scraper. MTN's AudApp sends the generic axios/0.21.4 useragent for RSS and audio. AudioWave sends AmazonCloudfront as a useragent for RSS. We've requested all these companies help us by fixing their useragents.
- Moving away from Apple Podcasts? There's no OPML export any more, so how do you do it? Nathan Gathright posts a Twitter thread including using the Shortcuts tool to achieve it.
- Want to host your website and your podcast for free on someone else's computer? Here's how to host your podcast and website using IPFS.
- Boostagram Corner: we're grateful to you for sending us messages with your boosts, which you can now read on the Podnews website. Over the last week, Adam Curry send 5,000 sats saying just "great episode" - we like boosts like that - and points out that pirated copies of his podcast appear regularly on Spotify. Got something to say? Hit the boost button in your podcast app, like Fountain.

- The Jordan Harbinger Show features a Ukrainian podcaster in today's edition - we covered Yuriy Matsarsky's show last Friday, but in Jordan's latest show, we find out why, and how, he's podcasting from the frontline.
