Radical shifts are upending today’s media landscape

The Global Editors Network (GEN) is an international association of over 6,000 editors-in-chief and media executives with the mission of fostering digital innovation in newsrooms all over the world. The organisation’s flagship event, the GEN Summit, gathers over 750 participants – editors-in-chief, startup CEOs, academics and media innovators – from 80 countries to discuss the radical shifts upending today’s media landscape.

How will artificial intelligence, voice interfaces, and blockchain impact your newsroom? Can they be used to improve efficiency and build deeper relationships with audiences?

Will newsrooms break into the black boxes that are algorithms? And how can these new power structures be held to account?

Where is the line between news personalisation and targeted marketing?

The GEN Summit will host these discussions (and many more) in Lisbon, Portugal, at the historic Pátio da Galé on 30 May–1 June. Over the course of the three days split into three themes – disruption, personalisation, monetisation – more than 80 industry leaders will share their experiences, insights, and predictions as we all head towards the augmented newsroom.

Companies/startups/universities attending include the Guardian, the Washington Post, Deutsche Welle, El País, BBC, Quartz, Bibblio, the Associated Press, Columbia University

Condé Nast, and more.

The sessions

Here is a taster of what you can expect at the GEN Summit:

  • Robolution: the 50 shades of news bots
  • Chatbots have been around since 2015 and they have, thus far, made marketers (very) happy. However, only a few Chatbots in the news and media industry have been effective, user-friendly – and patient. Join this session to find out who, from the chatbot population, is the good, the bad, and the ugly.
  • John Keefe, Paul Sergeant, Anne-Mary Tomchak
  • The Augmented Newsroom: how AI will impact the journalism we know
  • Journalism is more than 200 years old, but the technology that might significantly change it has not celebrated it’s tenth birthday yet. Artificial intelligence will have more impact on content production than the invention of the Internet or social networks. Some institutes even predict that robots and algorithms will produce 90 percent of articles and videos by 2025. Editors and publishers may have missed the mobile and platform revolution, but they cannot miss the AI one.
  • Francesco Marconi, Reginald Chua, Norman Pearlstine

Alongside the sessions on the main stage, this year the GEN Summit will also host a number of masterclasses – 60-minute workshops for around 60 participants etc. – and unconferences – in which 30 participants will dig deeper into topics discussed on the conference main stage
