What the hack? FAQ

What is a hack?

A hack is a gathering of people who want to develop innovation in a very unique way. The innovation can come in the form of a new app, a new storytelling format or hardware that didn’t exist before. Acutally there are no boundaries as long it is new and it works. The special thing is  participants don’t have weeks or months but only two days to form their ideas into first prototypes. Groups will team up on the spot and work intensively on the next big thing!

Where is the hack?

The Radio Hack Europe will take place in the most digital hotel in Vienna. The Hotel Schani is known for its Co-Working space, creative atmosphere, specially designed rooms and the great Wifi. The hotel is close to the central station, the metro and the Radiodays Europe Venue "Austria Center Vienna" (20 minutes by Metro). To sum it up, there could be no better place in Vienna for the Radio Hack Europe. You get a special hack price for the room. More information very soon...

What is the goal of RHE?

In short: to build the radio of the future! Each team will present a prototype of their idea for the future of radio at the end of the hack. The best prototypes will be presented on the main stage during Radio Days Europe. That way, you can pitch in front of Europes radio industry leaders and producers. Giving this international audience the lastest innovatio in the future of radio  – a classic win-win situation. If your idea works and is well received, this might even be the beginning of your own StartUp!

What’s in it for me?

You get to meet people from all over Europe who – just like you – have a deep passion for the future of radio and want to create ideas, discuss concepts and work on solutions. In 2017 we had 45 hackers from 11 countries. 48 hours of hacking will give you the opportunity to fully dive in and expand your ideas, pushing yourself, your radio station, even the whole industry!

How can I partner with Radio Hack?

There are numerous ways for technological partners and interested companies to support and sponsor the hack. Besides classic sponsoring packages we offer the possibility of providing API's, corporate applications/software or hardware to the hackers. What’s in it for you? Innovations, new ideas and the possibility to work with people who are developing the future of their station! For further information please contact frederik@radiodayseurope.com.

How can I participate?

We will start the registration very soon! Please note: there shouldn´t participate more than three people from one company.

What costs may arise?

Yes, but little. The costs for the event are € 49 incl. VAT. We will feed you with healthy fruits, coffee, tea and drinks, so you can concentrate on hacking. Travel- and hotel expenses however cannot be covered, but there will be a unbeatable price on the rooms at the Hotel Schani where the hack will take place. Every hacker also receives a great discount on tickets for Radiodays Europe (we will announce the pricing very soon).

What’s the timetable for the Radio Hack?

The Hack starts on Friday evening (March 16th) with the idea pitches. Present your idea and form your hack team. As soon as all the groups have formed, the hack begins. Sunday will be the day to get your prototype ready and work on your pitch. You will pitch to the jury in the afternoon. The jury will then decide, which team can present at the grand closing event of Radiodays Europe in front of the whole European radio scene - yeah that's right!

What equipment will be available, what can / should I bring myself?

Bring your own device! As we don’t know what crazy ideas slumber in your heads, there’s no way we can be prepared for everything. Bring those devices that you’re familiar with to create the next big thing for radio.
